A chat answers. A department owns the result.

Why the unit of AI work in a company is a team with a job, not a box you type into — and what that changes.

For two years the usual shape of AI at work has been the chat window: you type, it replies. It is a useful thing. But it is the wrong unit of work for a company, because a company does not run on answers. It runs on results that someone owns.

Ask a chat to "launch the campaign" and you get a plan, a draft, a checklist. Then a person reads it, decides what is real, splits it into tasks, chases them, checks the results and ships. The chat did the easy part. The company did the rest. The unit of work never changed.

Vepartment changes the unit. What you set up is not a model with instructions. It is a department: a marketing department, a sales department, a finance department, each with a job, running every day, accountable for what it produces rather than for a reply.

Every department is the same machine

A department is not a bespoke build. Each one is assembled the same way, whether it is Finance or Marketing or Legal, from six jobs: keeping the company's facts and memory; turning a goal into a plan; doing the work; watching the numbers; improving on what worked; and trying what the playbook does not cover yet. Swap the knowledge and the same machine runs a different function.

That sameness is the whole point. It is what lets a new department come online in an afternoon instead of a quarter, and what lets a company of fourteen people and a group with several business units run on the same structure.

How much it may do alone is a dial, not a switch

Every department runs at a level you choose, from "ask me every time" to "do the small routine steps on your own and tell me". Finance can sit at one level while Marketing sits at another, in the same company, on the same day. And whatever the level, anything sent to a customer waits for your yes.

What you approve is kept

Because every department shares one memory of the company — the facts you gave, the drafts you approved, the rules you set — each piece of work makes the next one better. The second campaign is cheaper than the first. The tenth offer letter is faster than the ninth. Work stops evaporating into chat logs and starts accumulating.

That is the difference between a tool you ask and a department you run. One saves you minutes. The other keeps what it learns.
